Rock-hewn church Ivanavo
Be ready for a bit of "old-school" when traveling off the beaten tourist track. The Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo, an UNESCO World Heritage site, was close to where we were staying in Bulgaria. This, the still active Basarbovski Monastery (also carved into cliff) and the Orlova Chuka Cave made for a full day of touring. Getting to these places was difficult without a car (even though we were only going 20 miles or so) - so we rented one! Bulgaria is in the EU, but it still felt like old-school Eastern Europe. We had to put down the fee and the deposit in cash. Not having that much Lev, we shook out our suitcases and found enough American dollar and Euros to make the company happy for us to take the 2004 car with dodgy breaks for a few hours.
